Kirchheimbolanden sijaitsee pohjoisen Pfalzin vuorimaan (Nordpfälzer Bergland) ja Alzeyn kumpumaan (Alzeyer Hügelland) ylimenoalueella. Alzeyn kaupunki sijaitsee kymmenisen kilometriä Kirchheimbolandenista koilliseen. Kirchheimbolandenin alueella virtaa yhdeksänkilometrinen Leiselsbach-joki, joka on 43-kilometrisen Pfrimmin sivujoki, joka puolestaan on yksi Reinin sivujoista. Rein virtaa noin 25 kilometriä Kirchheimbolandenista itään Rheinland-Pfalzin ja Hessenin rajajokena.
Kirchheimbolanden on aluehallintoyksikkö Verbandsgemeinde Kirchheimbolandenin suurin kunta. Yksikköön kuuluu Kirchheimbolandenin lisäksi 15 pientä kuntaa. Se muodostettiin osana 1960-luvulla aloitettua paikallishallinnon järkeistämistä. Kuntia kutsutaan nimellä "Ortsgemeinde", joka on Rheinland-Pfalzissa, Sveitsissä ja Itävallassa käytössä oleva paikallishallinnollisen alueen termi. Kirchheimbolandenin kuntayhtymän väkiluku on noin 20 000 ja pinta-ala noin 150 neliökilometriä.[4]
Kirchheimbolanden sai kaupunkioikeudet vuonna 1368. Paikkakunnasta on kuitenkin maininta jo vuodelta 774. Nimi on vaihdellut aikakausien saatossa: vuoden 1284 tienoilla se oli Kirchheim bei Bolanden, 1399 Kirchheim auf dem Gau, 1700-luvulla Kirchheimboland ja 1800-luvulla Kirchheimbolanden. Kolmikymmenvuotinen sota kuin myös yhdeksänvuotinen sota 1600-luvun lopulla olivat kaupungille tuhoisia. Suurinta kukoistuskauttaan Kirchheim eli ruhtinaiden Karl August (1719–1753) ja Karl Christian (1753–1788) aikana. Jälkimmäinen oli aviossa Hollannin prinsessa Carolinen kanssa. Ruhtinaiden valtakaudella kaupunkiin rakennettiin muun muassa linna puutarhoineen, Hofkirche (Hovikirkko) eli nykyinen Paulskirche ja kulttuurirakennuksia. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart esiintyi Hovikirkossa 1778.[5]
Vuonna 1797 Kirchheimbolanden liitettiin muun Pfalzin mukana Ranskaan, seuraavalla vuosisadalla se kuului Baijerin kuningaskuntaan.[5]
Toisen maailmansodan jälkeen Kirchheimbolanden kuului Ranskan miehitysvyöhykkeeseen (Französische Besatzungszone). Siitä tuli osa uutta Rheinland-Pfalzin osavaltiota. Landkreis Rockenhausen ja Landkreis Kirchheimbolanden yhtyivät nykyiseksi Donnersbergkreisin piiriksi 7. kesäkuuta 1969.[6]
Kirchheimbolandenin vanhakaupunki on pääosin 1500–1800-luvuilta. Kaupungin nähtävyyksiin kuuluu edellä mainittu Schloss Kirchheimbolanden eli Kirchheimbolandenin linna, joka on rakennettu 1738–1740. Paikalla on sijainnut linnake jo 1300-luvun lopulla.
Yhdysvaltalaisella autonosia valmistavalla BorgWarnerilla on tuotantolaitos Kirchheimbolandenissa.[7] Kaupungissa on myös elektroniikka- ja jalkineteollisuutta.[8][9] Kirchheimbolandenin rautatieasema toimi vuodesta 1874 vuoteen 1999, jolloin se korvattiin pysähdyspaikalla. Maantieliikenteen keskeinen väylä on Bundesautobahn 63 (Mainz–Kaiserslautern). Moottoritie kulkee aivan keskustan itäpuolitse.
Kirchheimbolandenissa ovat syntyneet muun muassa ruhtinatar Amalie von Nassau-Weilburg (1776–1841), tiedemies Georg von Neumayer (1826–1909), tutkimusmatkailija Eugen Wolf (1850–1912) ja jalkapalloilija Sascha Kotysch (1988).
