Le Land s'étend sur 16 392 km2 et en 2019, sa population était de 1 243 052 habitants.
La Styrie est limitrophe de cinq autres régions de l'Autriche (Carinthie, Haute-Autriche, Basse-Autriche, Burgenland, Salzbourg), et de la Slovénie au sud.
Son nom vient de la ville de Steyr.
La rivière principale est la Mur (en allemand : Mur ; en slovène : Mura), qui suit la frontière sur 40 kilomètres. Le mont Hoher Dachstein est le point culminant du Land avec 2 995 m d'altitude.
