Naceu en Gavrontsi, nas proximidades do Poltava no seo dunha familia nobre, e educouse no estranxeiro viaxando con súa nai por Europa. En 1870 súa nai instálase nunha vila preto de Niza e xa en París estudou pintura na Académie Julian, unha das poucas institucións que aceptaban mulleres. En 1881 escribiu artigos, co alcume de Pauline Orrel, para o xornal feminista de Hubertine Auclert, La Citoyenne.
Na súa curta vida, Marie, realizou importantes composicións, entre as que sobresaen Un meeting, L'Atelier des femmes e o seu Autorretrato. Boa parte das súas obras destruíronas os nazis durante a segunda guerra mundial.
Dende os 13 anos escribiu un diario en francés no que documenta os problemas das mulleres artistas e que se fixo famoso cando o publicou a súa familia en 1890 co título de Journal de Marie Bashkirtseff avec portrait. A súa correspondencia con Guy de Maupassant publicouse en 1891.
