O Ciclo de Otto é un ciclo termodinámico, que idealiza o funcionamento de motores de combustión interna con ignición por faísca. Foi definido por Beau de Rochas e aplicado con logro polo enxeñeiro alemán Nikolaus Otto en 1876, e posteriormente por Étienne Lenoir e Rudolf Diesel.

Este ciclo caracterízase porque a adición de calor se produce a "volume constante" a diferenza do ciclo Diesel onde se fai a "presión constante".

Fases

  1. Compresión 1-2 isentrópica
  2. Adición de Calor 2-3 a volume constante
  3. Expansión 3-4 isentrópica
  4. Renovación 4-1 isóbara (presión constante)

Tipos

O ciclo Otto pódese aplicar tanto en motores de dous tempos (motores pequenos: ciclomotores, pequenos xeradores...) como en motores de catro tempos (a maioría dos motores de gasolina en vehículos)
