Os trópicos son paralelos xeográficos que limitan a zona por onde o Sol pasa polo zénit. Representan a traxectoria aparente diúrna da proxección do Sol sobre a superficie terrestre nos solsticios.
A Terra posúe dous trópicos, son o trópico de Cáncer e o trópico de Capricornio.
O trópico de Capricornio é o paralelo situado ao sur do ecuador terrestre, delimita a zona tropical sur. Correspondendo á declinación máis meridional da elíptica do Sol sobre o ecuador celeste.
O trópico de Cáncer é o paralelo situado ao norte do ecuador terrestre, delimita a zona tropical norte. Correspondendo á declinación máis setentrional da elíptica solar para o ecuador celeste.
