II. Mátyás 1614-ben Linzbe összehívott gyűlésére Magyarország részéről Lépest küldték. 1619-ben kalocsai érseki címet kap, július 22-től a győri püspöki javadalmakat is bírta. 1620-ban Bethlen Gábornál járt követségben járt, majd a fejedelem a császárral békét kötött. Tiltakozott a bécsi béke katolikus egyházat hátrányosan érintő rendelkezései ellen. A születő magyar barokk próza képviselője volt.
Két utóbbi művében Lépes az úgynevezett négy utolsó dologról (halál, utolsó ítélet, menny, pokol) elmélkedik. Műve tulajdonképpen Gabriele d'Inchino olasz szerzetes hasonló témakörű, Antonius Dulcken által latinra fordított könyvének magyarított változata. A két mű anyagát tulajdonképpen prédikációnak szánta – valószínűleg egyes részleteit el is mondta –, a művek egésze mégis inkább elmélkedésre késztető olvasmány.
Ennek szolgálatába állította minden retorikai és stilisztikai eszközét: a drámai előadásmódot, a képzuhatagokat, a folytonos halmozást, a minden ízükben kidolgozott, erősen vizuális hasonlatokat, a meglepő szóképeket, metaforákat. Annak a bizonyítására, hogy mindenki meghal, Lépes szükségesnek tartja V. Pálig († 1621) valamennyi – 236! ... Hol az erős Cyrus? ... Hol amaz nagy sok csudatevő Moyses?”), sűrű – de mindig alaposan megmagyarázott – latin idézetekkel, szójátékokkal, gazdag zeneiségű körmondatokkal színesíteni.[1]
