Academy Award untuk Film Pendek Animasi Terbaik (bahasa Inggris: Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film) adalah penghargaan yang diberikan oleh Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) sebagai bagian dari Academy Awards tahunan, atau Oscar, sejak Academy Awards ke-5 (dengan nama berbeda), yang mencakup tahun 1931–32, hingga saat ini.

Dari tahun 1932 hingga 1970, kategori ini dikenal sebagai Subjek Pendek, Kartun; dan dari tahun 1971 hingga 1973 sebagai Subjek Pendek, Film Animasi. Judul sekarang dimulai dengan Penghargaan ke-46 pada tahun 1974. Selama 5 dekade pertama keberadaan penghargaan ini, penghargaan diberikan kepada produser film pendek. Namun, aturan Akademi saat ini mengharuskan penghargaan diberikan kepada "orang yang paling bertanggung jawab langsung atas konsep dan eksekusi kreatif film tersebut." Selain itu, "[d]alam hal lebih dari satu individu terlibat secara langsung dan penting dalam keputusan kreatif, patung kedua dapat diberikan."[1]

Hanya Film Amerika yang dinominasikan untuk penghargaan tersebut hingga National Film Board of Canada (NFB) dinominasikan untuk The Romance of Transportation in Canada pada tahun 1952. Film pendek internasional non-bahasa Inggris pertama yang menang adalah Ersatz (The Substitute) produksi Zagreb Film pada tahun 1961.

Film pertama yang menang dalam kategori ini adalah Flowers and Trees karya Walt Disney, yang sejak saat itu memegang rekor kategori tersebut untuk nominasi terbanyak (39) dan kemenangan terbanyak (12).[2][3] Tom and Jerry (1940–67) produksi MGM adalah serial animasi yang paling dipuji dalam kategori tersebut secara keseluruhan, dinominasikan untuk total 13 Oscar dan memenangkan 7. Serial Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies dari Warner Bros. juga mendapat banyak nominasi Oscar, yakni 16 kali dan memenangkan 5 kali. Di antara studio internasional, NFB memiliki kemenangan terbanyak dalam kategori ini, dengan 6 Oscar. Penampilan terbesar dari Inggris dalam kategori ini adalah Nick Park, dengan tiga kemenangan: 1 untuk Creature Comforts dan 2 untuk seri Wallace & Gromit.

Akademi mendefinisikan pendek sebagai "tidak lebih dari 40 menit, termasuk semua kredit."[4] Lima belas film dimasukkan ke dalam daftar pendek sebelum nominasi diumumkan.
