Henry Levin

Henry Levin (Trenton, 5 giugno 1909 – Glendale, 1º maggio 1980) è stato un regista statunitense.

Biografia

Formatosi a teatro come attore e regista, nei primi anni quaranta entrò alla Columbia Pictures come dialogue director e in breve passò alla regia firmando i primi film tra il 1944 e il 1946.^[1] Nel dopoguerra diresse vari titoli di genere per Columbia, tra cui il noir The Guilt of Janet Ames (1947) e il western The Man from Colorado (1948).^[2] Con Jolson Sings Again (sequel del biopic su Al Jolson) consolidò la notorietà commerciale a fine anni quaranta.^[3]

Negli anni cinquanta collaborò con la 20th Century Fox, alternando commedie e musical (The President's Lady, 1953; April Love, 1957) a western come The Lonely Man (1957).^[4][5] Il suo titolo più celebre del decennio è l’avventura fantascientifica Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959), da Jules Verne.^[6]

Nel 1960 passò alla MGM con la commedia Where the Boys Are, film generazionale ambientato durante lo spring break in Florida,^[7] e nel 1962 co-diresse con George Pal il kolossal cinerama The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm.^[8] Tra i lavori successivi si segnalano l’epico Genghis Khan (1965),^[9] l’eurospy Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die (1966; it. Se tutte le donne del mondo... (Operazione Paradiso))^[10] e due capitoli della serie Matt Helm interpretata da Dean Martin: Murderers' Row (1966) e The Ambushers (1967).

Negli anni settanta lavorò anche per la televisione e concluse la carriera con il film TV Scout's Honor (1980): morì a Los Angeles il 1º maggio 1980, l’ultimo giorno di lavorazione.
