1979年のデビュー以来、ロマンス、ミステリなど多くの作品を生み出している。旧姓をもじったマリオン・チェズニー名義で発表した"Travelling Matchmaker" シリーズや"Daughters of Mannerling" シリーズなどの歴史ロマンスものでも成功を収めている。M・C・ビートン名義ではアガサ・レーズン・シリーズやヘイミッシュ・マクベス巡査シリーズなどのミステリを著している。ロマンスを発表する際には、アン・フェアファックス (Ann Fairfax) 、ジェニー・トレメイン (Jennie Tremaine) 、ヘレン・クランプトン (Helen Crampton) 、シャーロット・ウォード (Charlotte Ward) 、サラ・チェスター (Sarah Chester) などの名義を用いる。

経歴

1936年、スコットランドのグラスゴーで生まれる。書店のバイヤー、演劇評論、新聞のレポーター、編集者などの仕事を経験したのち、中東の特派員だったハリー・スコット・ギボンズ (Harry Scott Gibbons) と結婚し、息子のチャールズをもうける。^[1]現在は、アメリカ在住だが、コッツウォルズとパリのコテージを行き来している^[2]。

編集者である夫の勧めで筆をとり、マリオン・チェズニー名義でロマンス作家としてデビューする。以降、100冊以上のヒストリカル・ロマンスを執筆する。1985年に、M・C・ビートン名義でスコットランドを舞台にしたミステリ「ヘイミッシュ・マクベス巡査」シリーズ（日本語未訳）を発表、ロングシリーズとなり、BBCスコットランドによりテレビドラマ化され、高視聴率を記録した。
