김흡영

김흡영(Heup Young Kim, Kim Hŭb-yŏng, 金洽榮, 1949년1월)은 대한민국의 개신교 신학자이다. 본관은 선성(宣城). 자는 시원(始源), 호는 하늘새, ᄒᆞᆫᄇᆞᆸ이다. 한국과학생명포럼의 설립대표이며, 미국 버클리의 연합신학 대학원(Graduate Theological Union)의 아시아신학 석학교수(Distinguished Asian Theologian in Residence)이었다. 강남대학교에서 조직신학 교수로 재직하며, 인문대학장, 신학대학장, 신학대학원장, 교목실장을 역임했다. 또한 한신대학교, 중국 복단대학교, 연세대학교 글로벌신학대학원의 초빙교수로 활동했다.

최근에는 로마 기톨릭 바티칸 교황청의 종교간의 대화성(Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue)의 유교(Confucianism)에 대한 가이드라인 집필위원 그리고 교육문화성(Dicastery for Culture and Education) 디지털센터의 아시아 인공지능(Artificial Intelligence) 연구위원으로 초청되어 활동하고 있다.

생애

김흡영의 고향은 경상북도 영주에 있는 외나무다리로 유명한 국가유교문화보존 마을인 무섬마을이고, 그의 큰집은 국가민속문화유산으로 지정받은 해우당 고택이다. 그는 당시 한국에서 가장 명문 고등학교로 알려진 경기고등학교를 졸업한 후, 서울대학교 공과대학 항공공학과를 졸업하였다.

대한항공에서 항공 기술자로 경력을 시작하였으며, 이후 주식회사 대우의 기획실에서 근무하며 기업 업무로 전환하였다. 1970년대 한국의 급속한 경제 성장기 동안 그는 다양한 상품의 수출입을 전문으로 하는 종합무역상사 주식회사 삼화의 뉴욕 해외지사 주재원으로 발탁되어 근무하였다.

뉴욕에서 근무하던 중, 그는 유교에서 개신교로 회심하는 깊은 종교적 체험을 하게 되었다. 이 전환점은 그의 인생과 경력을 크게 변화시켰으며, 그는 기업 활동을 중단하고 신학 공부에 전념하기로 결심하였다. 이 결단은 그의 신학 연구와 종교 간 대화에서의 영향력 있는 업적을 쌓는 데 밑거름이 되었다.

그는 이후 프린스턴 신학교에서 교역학석사(M.Div)와 신학석사(Th.M)를 취득하였으며, 캘리포니아주 버클리의 연합신학대학원(Graduate Theological Union)에서 조직신학과 종교철학을 전공하여 철학박사(Ph.D) 학위를 취득하였다.

도의 신학(Theodao, Theology of Dao)

김흡영의 <도의 신학>(Theodao)은 기독교 신학과 동아시아의 지혜 전통, 특히 유교와 도교를 창의적으로 융합하여 현대 세계의 복합적인 도전 과제들에 대응하려는 시도이다. 도의 신학은 과학과 기술의 급속한 발전 속에서 기존 서구 신학의 전통적 로고스 중심 패러다임(theo-logos)을 비판하며, 이 패러다임이 강조하는 이성, 개인주의, 그리고 지성 중심주의에서 벗어나 지혜, 덕성, 조화를 중시하는 도(道) 중심 패러다임으로의 전환을 주장한다. 이를 통해 생태적 지속 가능성, 상호의존성, 그리고 인간이 우주 속에서 차지하는 위치에 대한 전체론적 이해를 강조한다.

도의 신학의 핵심은 초인공지능(AI)과 트랜스휴머니즘(transhumanism)이 제기하는 윤리적 및 존재론적 위기에 대한 대응이다. 김흡영은 "테크노-도"(techno-dao)라는 개념을 통해 기술 혁신을 단순히 기능적, 효율적으로 개선하는 데 그치지 않고 도의 지혜와 덕성을 통합하여 조화와 도덕적 책임을 촉진해야 한다고 주장한다. 또한, 도의 신학은 인간 및 생태적 가치를 반영하는 "덕 있는 인공지능(Virtuous AI)"의 개념을 제안하여, 초지능 시스템의 부상과 사회적 영향에 대한 우려를 해소하고자 한다.

수상

김흡영은 뛰어난 연구 업적을 통해 여러 학술적 영예를 안았다. 그는 2004년과 2005년에 탬플턴재단(John Templeton Foundation)으로부터 학술연구비(Research Grant)^[2]와 Global Perspectives on Science and Spirituality Award^[3]를 각각 수상하였다. 또한, 강남대학교로부터 최우수 연구 교수상 등 여러 학술상들을 받았다.

21세기가 시작되면서 그는 탬플턴재단이 한국과 아시아에서 최초로 지원하는 연합신학대학원(Graduate Theological Union) 신학과자연과학연구소(Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences, CTNS)의 초대형 교육 프로젝트를 유치하여 대학에 종교와 과학 과목을 설치하는 데 기여하였다. 이 프로젝트의 아시아 워크숍 디렉터(Director)로 활동하며 한국과 동아시아에서 종교와 과학 간의 대화를 이끄는 데 중요한 역할을 했다.

특히, 그는 2009년 한국인 최초로 모교인 연합신학대학원(Graduate Theological Union, GTU)에서 '2009년 가장 자랑스러운 동문'(Alum of the Year)으로 선정되어 그의 학문적 공로를 국제적으로 인정받았다.^[4][5][6]
