왕립천문학회 회장

왕립천문학회 회장 (1831년 이전에는 런던 천문학회 회장으로 알려짐)은 왕립천문학회 (RAS) 위원회(council) 및 공식 회의의 의장이다. 그들은 또한 영국 천문학 및 지구물리학 커뮤니티를 대신하여 정부 조직( 비즈니스, 혁신 및 기술부 및 영국 연구 위원회 포함), 다른 국가의 유사한 학회 및 국제 천문연맹과 연락을 취한다. 차기 회장은 회장 당선자로서 1년 동안 재직한 후 이전 회장의 뒤를 잇는다.

초대 회장은 1821년의 윌리엄 허셜이다. 그 이후로 다수의 저명한 천문학자들이 그 직책을 맡았다. 회장의 임기는 일반적으로 2년이지만 일부 회장은 건강 악화 등으로 1년 후에 사임했다. 프랜시스 베일리, 조지 에어리는 각각 기록적으로 4번 선출되었다. 에어리 회장은 학회 위원회 (Council)에서 부분 임기로 추가 임명되어 총 5번의 회장을 맡아 누구보다 많은 기간을 보냈다. 1876년 이래로는 총 2년 이상 근무한 회장은 없다.
