Golem est sculptura ex argilla ficta, quae per tesseram quasdam litteras magicas (fere Hebraice) ferentem et in caput insertum, vivificatur ut pro hominibus laboret. De illo scripsit novellam illustrem Gustavus Meyrink.
Secundum fabulam Iudaicam, in 16mo saeculo Rabbinus Iudas Loew ben Bezalel fertur golem, scilicet sculpturam animatam, creavisse ut Iudaeos Pragae ab oppugnationibus Iudaeophobicis defenderet. Fabula, quae in “’’Galerie der Sippurim”’’, florilegio mythorum Iudaeorum a Lupo Pascheles anno 1847 primum edita est, narrat Rudolphum II Imperatorem Romanum Sacrum iussisse ut omnes urbis Iudaei sive expellerentur sive occiderentur. Rabbinum tamen, ut populum suum protegeret, golem ex luto a ripa Multaviae fluminis plasmavisse et per ritus et incantationes Hebraeas vivificasse, sed quanto golem crevisse, tanto violentem factum esse ut gentes multas occideret, terrore magno late vulgato. Aliqui ferunt Golem tandem in creatorem ipsum violenter inversum esse et Iudaeos quoque oppugnare coepisse.
Imperator fertur Rabbinum obsecrasse ut Golem deleret, ei pollicitus se Iudaeorum persecutionem finiturum; itaque Rabbinum, ut Golem dirimeret, primam litteram detersisse vocabuli ”emet” (veritas) in creaturae fronte scripti, ut ”met” (mors) legeretur; Imperatorem tamen intellexisse quod si corpus Golem inanimatum sub tecto Synagogae Vetero-Novae reconderetur, in tempore necessitatis ad vitam restaurari posset. Creditur equidem a nonnullis corpus adhuc ibi iacere.
Recentior fama fert Nazistam quendam scalam ascendisse ad tectum synagogae ut Golem inventum deleret, et in conatu periisse.
Secundum mythologiam, Golemim bonum mixtum habendi sunt, quoniam utiles et validi nempe, intelligentes certe non sunt, et si negotium aut laborem efficere iussi erunt, praeceptos plane ad verbum oboedient.
Ferebatur a nonnullis Golem, baculo Rabbini adhibito, spiritus defunctorum arcessere posse.
