Izotopi (no grieķu ισος — vienāds, un τόπος — vieta) ir atomi, kuru kodolos ir vienāds skaits protonu, bet dažāds skaits neitronu. Izotopi tā ir nosaukti, jo atrodas vienā un tai pašā periodiskās sistēmas vietā - tiem ir vienādas (vai gandrīz vienādas) ķīmiskās īpašības.
Kā piemēru var minēt ūdeņraža atomus, kuriem var būt vienāds skaits protonu, bet atšķirīgs skaits neitronu, tātad šie atomi ir dažādi izotopi, ko sauc par protiju, deitēriju un tritiju.
1910. gadā angļu zinātnieks Frederiks Sodijs konstatēja, ka dabiskajos radioaktīvajos procesos var veidoties viena un tā paša ķīmiskā elementa atomi, kam ir vienāds kodola lādiņš, bet dažādas atommasas.
