Kontaktors ir līdzstrāvas vai maiņstrāvas distancvadāms elektrisks aparāts biežai jaudīgu zemsprieguma elektrisko ķēžu komutēšanai (līdz ~1500 reižu stundā). Tas ir divpozīciju komutators un tā kustīgie kontakti tiek darbināti elektromagnētiski (ar spoles palīdzību); retāk sastopami hidrauliskie, pneimatiskie, sprūdsistēmas un citi kontaktori. Kontaktoru nevar ieslēgt ar roku vai mehānisku triecienu. Elektriskajās shēmās kontaktorus apzīmē līdzīgi elektromagnētiskajiem relejiem.
Kontaktori pēc komutējamās strāvas veida iedalās līdzstrāvas, maiņstrāvas un augstfrekvences maiņstrāvas kontaktoros. Tie var būt ieslēdzošie, atslēdzošie un pārslēdzošie, kā arī virziena, laikaiztures, spēka, reversīvie un citi kontaktori. Kontaktori vienlaicīgi var komutēt vienu vai vairākas elektriskās ķēdes. Kontaktoriem svarīga ir elektriskā loka dzēšana pēc kontaktu atvienošanas - loku var dzēst gaisā (īpašās režģotās lokdzēses kamerās), vakuumā vai eļļā. Strāvu var izslēgt arī, izmantojot tiristoru blokus (hibrīdkontaktoros) vai spēka herkonus.
Elektromagnētiskais kontaktors sastāv no darbinātāja (piedziņas elektromagnēta), kinemātiskās sistēmas, kontaktu sistēmas (kustīgajiem un nekustīgajiem kontaktiem, kas var būt viens vai vairāki normāli atslēgti vai normāli noslēgti darba kontakti) un lokdzēses sistēmas. Kontaktora vadības ķēdē ieslēgti blokkontakti. Elektromagnēts sastāv no serdes, spoles un enkura, kurš savienots ar kustīgajiem darba kontaktiem. Ja spoli pieslēdz spriegumam, serde pievelk enkuru un kontakti maina stāvokli.
Kontaktorus lieto kā distancvadāmus slēdžus apgaismojuma, sildierīču un citu patērētāju komutēšanai un elektrodzinēju vadībai.
