ഒരു സ്കോട്ടിഷ് കവിയും നോവലിസ്റ്റും സാഹിത്യ നിരൂപകനും നരവംശശാസ്ത്ര മേഖലയിലെ സംഭാവനക്കാരനുമായിരുന്നു ആൻഡ്രൂ ലാങ് എഫ്ബിഎ (31 മാർച്ച് 1844 - 20 ജൂലൈ 1912) . നാടോടി കഥകളും യക്ഷിക്കഥകളും ശേഖരിക്കുന്നയാൾ എന്ന നിലയിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. സെന്റ് ആൻഡ്രൂസ് സർവകലാശാലയിലെ ആൻഡ്രൂ ലാങ് പ്രഭാഷണങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പേരിലാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.

ജീവചരിത്രം

1844-ൽ സ്കോട്ടിഷ് അതിർത്തിയിലെ സെൽകിർക്കിലാണ് ലാങ് ജനിച്ചത്. സെൽകിർക്കിലെ ടൗൺ ക്ലർക്ക് ജോൺ ലാങ്ങിനും സതർലാൻഡിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഡ്യൂക്കിന്റെ ഘടകമായ പാട്രിക് സെല്ലറിന്റെ മകളായ ജെയ്ൻ പ്ലെൻഡർലീത്ത് സെല്ലറിനും ജനിച്ച എട്ട് മക്കളിൽ മൂത്തവനായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. 1875 ഏപ്രിൽ 17-ന് അദ്ദേഹം ക്ലിഫ്‌ടണിലെയും ബാർബഡോസിലെയും സി.ടി. അല്ലെയ്‌നിന്റെ ഇളയ മകളായ ലിയോനോറ ബ്ലാഞ്ചെ അല്ലെയ്‌നെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹം എഡിറ്റ് ചെയ്ത ലാങ്സ് കളർ/റെയിൻബോ ഫെയറി ബുക്‌സിന്റെ രചയിതാവ്, സഹകാരി അല്ലെങ്കിൽ വിവർത്തക എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ അവർക്കും ബഹുമതി ലഭിച്ചു.^[1]

സെൽകിർക്ക് ഗ്രാമർ സ്കൂൾ, ലോറെറ്റോ സ്കൂൾ, എഡിൻബർഗ് അക്കാദമി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും സെന്റ് ആൻഡ്രൂസ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിലും ഓക്സ്ഫോർഡിലെ ബല്ലിയോൾ കോളേജിലും അദ്ദേഹം വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടി. അവിടെ അദ്ദേഹം 1868-ൽ ക്ലാസിക്കൽ സ്കൂളുകളിൽ അവസാനവർഷം ഒന്നാം ക്ലാസ് നേടി. മെർട്ടൺ കോളേജിലെ സഹപ്രവർത്തകനും തുടർന്ന് ഓണററി ഫെല്ലോയും ആയി.^[2] ഒരു പത്രപ്രവർത്തകൻ, കവി, നിരൂപകൻ, ചരിത്രകാരൻ എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ അക്കാലത്തെ ഏറ്റവും കഴിവുള്ളതും ബഹുമുഖവുമായ എഴുത്തുകാരിൽ ഒരാളായി അദ്ദേഹം ഉടൻ തന്നെ പ്രശസ്തി നേടി. 1890 കളിലും 1900 കളിലും നിരവധി എഴുത്തുകാരെയും കലാകാരന്മാരെയും ആകർഷിച്ച നിയോ-യാക്കോബായ സമൂഹമായ ഓർഡർ ഓഫ് ദി വൈറ്റ് റോസിലെ അംഗമായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.^[3] 1906-ൽ അദ്ദേഹം FBA ആയി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു.^[4]

1912 ജൂലൈ 20-ന് ബഞ്ചോറിയിലെ ടോർ-നാ-കോയിൽ ഹോട്ടലിൽ വെച്ച് അൻജിന പെക്റ്റൊറിസ് ബാധിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം മരിച്ചു, സെന്റ് ആൻഡ്രൂസിലെ കത്തീഡ്രൽ പരിസരത്താണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സംസ്കരിച്ചത്. പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ സെക്ഷനിൽ തെക്ക്-കിഴക്ക് മൂലയിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സ്മാരകം കാണാം.
