1898ൽ ഫിലിപ്പെൻസ്, ക്യൂബ എന്നീ കോളനികളിലെ ഭരണത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ സ്പെയിനുമായി അമേരിക്ക യുദ്ധത്തിലേർപ്പെട്ടതിനേയാണ് സ്പാനിഷ്-അമേരിക്കൻ_യുദ്ധം എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. യുദ്ധത്തിൽ പരാജയപ്പെട്ട സ്പെയിനിൽ നിന്നും ഫിലിപ്പെൻസും ഗുവാവും അമേരിക്ക സ്വന്തമാക്കി. അമേരിക്ക എന്ന ലോകശക്തിയുടെ ഉദയത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കമായിരുന്നു ഈ യുദ്ധം.
