"നേപ്പാൾ ഭാസ" എന്നാൽ "നേപ്പാളി ഭാഷ" എന്നാണ് അർത്ഥമാക്കുന്നത്. എന്നിരുന്നാലും ഈ ഭാഷ കേന്ദ്ര ഗവൺമെന്റിന്റെ രാജ്യത്തെ നിലവിലെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷയായ നേപ്പാളി (ദേവനാഗരി: नेपाली) പോലെയല്ല. രണ്ട് ഭാഷകളും വ്യത്യസ്ത ഭാഷാ കുടുംബങ്ങളിൽ പെടുന്നു (യഥാക്രമം ചൈന-ടിബറ്റൻ, ഇന്തോ-യൂറോപ്യൻ), എന്നാൽ നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾ നീണ്ട സമ്പർക്കം പങ്കുവെച്ച പദാവലിയുടെ ഗണ്യമായ ഒരു കൂട്ടത്തിന് കാരണമായി.
