Martens werd in 2006 prof bij Skil-Shimano na in 2005 stage te hebben gelopen bij T-Mobile. Voor de Nederlandse pro-continentale ploeg won hij etappes in de Ronde van Luxemburg in 2006 en in de Ster Elektrotoer (2007). Vanaf 2008 t/m 30 mei 2021 reed hij voor Team LottoNL-Jumbo.
De Duitser Martens is getrouwd met een Nederlandse vrouw en woont met zijn gezin in Nederland.
