York City FC

York City Football Club is een Engelse professionele voetbalclub uit de stad York, North Yorkshire. Vanaf het seizoen 2022/23 komt het uit in de National League, op het vijfde niveau van het Engels voetbalsysteem. De club kwam twee seizoenen (1974 tot 1976) uit op het tweede niveau, maar bracht haar jaren vooral door in de kelder van het Engelse profvoetbal.

De club, opgericht in 1922, speelde zeven seizoenen in non-league voetbal voordat het toetrad tot de Football League. York speelde op het derde niveau tot 1959, toen ze voor het eerst promoveerden. York behaalde hun beste run in de FA Cup in 1954/55, toen ze Newcastle United troffen in de halve finale. Ze schommelden tussen het derde en tweede niveau, voordat ze in de jaren zeventig twee seizoenen in de Second Division doorbrachten. York speelde voor het eerst in het Wembley Stadium in 1993, toen ze de finale van de play-offs van het derde niveau wonnen. Aan het einde van het seizoen 2003/04 verloren ze hun Football League-status nadat ze waren gedegradeerd uit de Third Division. De FA Trophy 2011/12 was de eerste nationale bekercompetitie die werd gewonnen door York, en ze keerden dat seizoen terug naar de Football League voordat ze in 2016 weer degradeerden naar non-League-voetbal.

York heeft als bijnaam Minstermen (verwijzend naar York Minster) en het team speelt traditioneel in rode tenue's. Ze speelden op Fulfordgate van 1922 tot 1932, alvorens ze naar Bootham Crescent verhuisden, hun thuisbasis voor 88 jaar. Ze verhuisden in 2021 naar hun huidige onderkomen, het York Community Stadium. York heeft rivaliteit gehad met tal van clubs, maar hun traditionele rivalen zijn Hull City en Scarborough.
