Hij nam een zeer onafhankelijke positie in. Zijn residentie was Halicarnassus (tegenwoordig Bodrum), waar zich ook zijn bekende Mausoleum (een van de zeven wereldwonderen) bevond. Hiervan is het bekende woord voor praalgraf afkomstig: mausoleum.
