Anderson heeft gestudeerd aan de University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. In de jaren zeventig was hij dramaleraar aan de Antelope Valley College in Lancaster (Californië).

Anderson is vanaf 1985 getrouwd, en is vader van een tweeling.
