Ein nettverksprotokoll er ei samling reglar, som beskriv korleis dataterminalutstyr og nettutstyr utvekslar, sender eller mottek data. Døme: IP, TCP, UDP, DIX ethernet II, ATM, V.34, V.90 og V.42bis.
