Banchory (skotsk-gælisk: Beannchar; skotsk: Banchry)[1] er en by (town) i regionen Aberdeenshire i Skottland. Byen har historisk status som burgh. Den ligger rundt 29 km vest for Aberdeen, nær der hvor elven Feugh møter elven Dee.

I henhold til folketellingen i 2011 har byen en befolkning på 7 342 innbyggere, beregnet til 7 560 for 2014.[2] Beregningen for 2020 har 7440 innbyggere, noe som antyder at befolkningstallet er relativt stabilt.[3]
I 2009 oppdaget en bonde en kort hellekistegrav øst for byen. Arkeologer ble tilkalt for å grave den ut og gjøre sine undersøkelser. De kunne slå fast at graven tilhørte klokkebegerkulturen. Karbondatering graven til en gang mellom 2330–2040 f.Kr. Stabil isotopanalyse av de menneskelige levningene indikerte at hen vokste opp på basalt geologi, som det er i regionen, eller på bergarten kritt, noe som betyr at de enten var lokale eller kunne ha kommet fra et annet sted, som Yorkshire. Restanalyse av en keramikkgryte som funnet i graven viste at den hadde inneholdt enten smør eller melk.[4]
Stedsnavnet antas å være avledet fra en tidlig kristen bosetning grunnlagt av sankt Ternan. Det hevdes at Ternan var en tilhenger av sankt Ninian. Tradisjonen, i mangelen av sikre historiske kilder, hevder at han etablerte sin bosetning ved elven Dee i hva som senere ble kirkegården til middelalderens sogn Banchory-Ternan.[5] Landsbyen og sognet beholdt sitt navn fram til 1970-tallet. Den opprinnelige gæliske formen er bortimot identisk til det til Bangor i Nord-Irland, og med samme betydning og et sete for kloster.
Relikvier knyttet til sankt Ternan ble bevart av arvelige voktere ved Banchory fram til den skotske reformasjonen. To tidlige kristne korsplater bevart i eller i nærheten av den gamle kirkegården på stedet for den tidlige kirken. Det ene er bygget inn i eller nær den gamle kirkegården, og viser to kors utskåret i en slitt lyserød granittplate. Den andre er et ringmerket kors i relieff bygget inn i veggen mot hovedveien utenfor kirkegården.[6]
