Det kan belegges bosetting i Tomblaine-området så langt tilbake som 300 år f.Kr., i gallo-romesk tid.
På 1600-tallet raste kriger og hungersnød i området. Folketallet falt dramatisk, men tok seg senere opp igjen. I 1770 tilhørte buens borg prins Ludvig, den fremtidige konge av Frankrike.
Kommunen ble ødelagt under den tyske okkupasjon i 1944. Men den ble senere gjenoppbygd.
Etappe 7 av Tour de France 2012 den 7. juli startet i denne landsbyen.
