Frihetsgrader angis ved utvalgsstørrelsen (N) minus 1, altså N - 1. Har man et utvalg på 21 personer vil det altså være 20 frihetsgrader. Når utvalget er over 50 vil frihetsgrader for de fleste praktiske formål ikke ha noen betydning.
Merk den siste raden med uendelig mange frihetsgrader viser et avgjørende poeng: en t-fordeling med uendelig mange frihetsgrader er en normalfordeling i samsvar med sentralgrenseteoremet.
