ਨਿਊਯਾਰਕ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਮੁੱਖ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਨਿਊਯਾਰਕ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਜਨ-ਸੰਖਿਆ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਹੈ। ਨਿਊ ਐਮਸਟਰਡਮ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਨਿਊ ਯਾਰਕ ਬਣਿਆ: ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੱਚ ਕੌਮ (ਹਾਲੈਂਡ) ਦੇ ਕਬਜ਼ੇ ਹੇਠਲੇ ਮੈਨਹੈਟਨ ਟਾਪੂ ਦੀ ਵਸੋਂ 1614 ਤੋਂ 1624 ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਾਂਗ ਬਣ ਗਈ। 1625 ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਾਲੈਂਡ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਐਮਸਟਰਡਮ' ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੋਕੜ ਵਿੱਚ 'ਨਿਊ ਐਮਸਟਰਡਮ' ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਡੱਚ ਬਸਤੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਇਥੇ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਉਸਾਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿਤਾ ਗਿਆ। 1653 ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦਾ ਦਰਜਾ ਦੇ ਦਿਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਮਗਰੋਂ ਅਠਾਰਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਦ ਇਹ ਨਿਊਯਾਰਕ ਸਟੇਟ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਬਣਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ 'ਨਿਊਯਾਰਕ' ਪੈ ਗਿਆ।
