 ਹਿੰਦੂਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਆਹ ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਸਮਝੋਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ। ਮੁਕਰ੍ਜੀ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, "ਕੁਝ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਮਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਦੋ ਵਿਪਰੀਤ ਲਿੰਗਾ ਦਾ ਵਿਧੀਵਤ ਮਿਲਣ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕੰਮ, ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਰਟਿਆਇ ਦੇ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ।"^[1][2][3]
