Albert Einstein (1879–1955) foi um renomado físico teórico do século XX, mais conhecido por suas teorias da relatividade especial e relatividade geral. Também fez contribuições importantes para a mecânica estatística, especialmente seu tratamento do movimento browniano, sua resolução do paradoxo de cálculos específicos e sua conexão de flutuações e dissipação. Apesar de suas ressalvas quanto à sua interpretação, Einstein também fez contribuições seminais para a mecânica quântica e, indiretamente, à teoria quântica de campos, principalmente através de seus estudos teóricos do fóton.[1]

Einstein also extends Bose's formalism to material particles (bosons), predicting that they condense at sufficiently low temperatures, as verified experimentally.[158]

The appendix was translated by Ernst G. Straus. A "third edition" was published in 1946 by Methuen (London), but it is identical except for a change in pagination. The true third, fourth and fifth editions appeared in 1950, 1953 and 1956, respectively. In the 3rd, Einstein added Appendix II on a generalized theory of gravitation, which was substantially revised for the fifth and final edition.
