The ceety haes enguwft maist o the municipality, makkin the twa synonymous. The name comes frae Náhuatl an means 'atween the trees.'[1]

Cuautitlán began as a Chichimeca veelage aroond the 14t century. It wis dominatit bi Tlacopan afore bein conquered bi the Mexica an made pairt o the Aztec Empire. Efter the Conquest, Cuautitlán wis evangelisit bi the Franciscans. They constructit San Buenaventura monastery an established the britherhuid o the Purísima Concepción de Nuestra Señora de Cuautitlán. Saunt Juan Diego (1474–1548) reputitly livit thare wi his wife Maria Lucia up tae the time o her daith in 1529. They livit thare in a ane-roomit mud hoose thatched wi corn stalks. The hoose still survives in a guid state o preservation. Cuautitlán gained ceety status in 1968.[1]
