Area code 219 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan. It covers the northwest part of Indiana, including cities like Gary, Hammond, and East Chicago. This area code was one of the original area codes created in 1947 and originally covered the entire northern half of Indiana. In 2002, area code 219 was split, and the central and eastern parts were given new area codes (574 and 260).
