Area codes 440 and 436 are telephone area codes in the state of Ohio, United States. 440 was created on August 16, 1997, when it was split from area code 216. It covers the northeastern part of Ohio, including many suburbs of Cleveland and other nearby towns. Some of the major cities and towns in this area code include Mentor, Elyria, Lakewood, Lorain, and Ashtabula. 440 ran out of numbers so it was overlaid by 436 in 2024.[1]
