Area codes 617 and 857 are area codes for Massachusetts. It is one of the first area codes created in 1947. It initially covered the entire eastern portion of Massachusetts, but afterward it was split by 508 in 1988, as well as 781 and 978 in 1997. It now covers the Boston and Cambridge area. It was overlaid by 857 in 2001.
