Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (Swedish pronunciation: [kɑːɭ ²ɡɵsːtav ˈeːmɪl ²manːɛrˌheɪm]; 4 June 1867 – 27 January 1951) was a Finnish military leader and statesman.[1] Before World War I he was an officer in the Imperial Russian Army. With the Russian Revolution Finland declared independence and Mannerheim led the Whites in the Finnish Civil War. He became Regent of Finland (1918–1919), commander-in-chief of Finland's defence forces during World War II, Marshal of Finland, and the sixth President of Finland (1944–1946).
