Cognac is a commune in southwestern France in the Charente department, Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, of which it is a subprefecture.

Geography
The city of Cognac is along the Charente river, mainly on its left side, between the cities of Angoulême, prefecture of the Charente department, and Saintes, a subprefecture in the Charente-Maritime department.
It has an area of 15.5 km2 (6.0 sq mi).[2] Its average altitude is 29 m (95 ft); at the city hall, the altitude is 21 m (69 ft).[3]
Cognac is at about 60 km (37 mi) to the east of the Atlantic coast.

The climate of Cognac is an oceanic climate with template summers, Cfb (Marine West Coast Climate) in the Köppen climate classification.[4]

Cognac is a subprefecture of the Charente department, the capital of the arrondissement of Cognac and the administrative centre (French: chef-lieu) of two cantons:

It is part of the intercommunality Grand Cognac (French: Communauté d'agglomération du Grand Cognac).
