Denis Hale Johnson (July 1, 1949 – May 24, 2017) was an American writer. He was born in Munich, Germany.[1] Johnson best known for his short story collection Jesus' Son (1992) and his novel Tree of Smoke (2007), which won the National Book Award for Fiction. He also wrote plays, poetry and non-fiction.

Johnson died at his home on May 24, 2017 in Gualala, California from liver cancer at the age of 67.[2]
