A division in an army is a group of usually about 10,000 – 20,000 soldiers, though some divisions are larger or smaller. It is usually commanded by a Major General or equivalent officer.

A division usually has a headquarters and at least two Brigades. There are infantry divisions, airborne divisions, armor divisions and other kinds.
In the Navy a division may be sub-unit of several ships within a squadron or flotilla, or a functional department within a warship, such as the fire control division.
