gzip is a computer program and file format is used to compress and decompress files. It is most commonly used on Linux and Unix-like operating systems.
A ".gz" file contains data compressed with gzip. Often, the file extension will be ".tar.gz", meaning the tar tool was used to combine a directory into a single file.
