Hessian (soldier)

The Hessians were German soldiers who were hired to fight for the British Empire during the American Revolutionary War.

Some princes in Germany agreed to give Great Britain men to fight in return for money and were made rich by their soldiers' services.

There is controversy on whether or not the Hessians were mercenaries or auxiliaries. However, because they fought alongside other soldiers and had been sent by their princes, they are typically referred to as auxiliaries.
