Holstein (Northern Low Saxon: Holsteen; Danish: Holsten; Latin: Holsatia) is the historical region between the rivers Elbe and Eider. It is the southern area of Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost state of Germany.
Holstein had different forms through time, they include: the County of Holstein (811-1474), the Duchy of Holstein (1474-1866). The history of Holstein is very closely related to the Duchy of Schleswig.
It was annexed by the German Empire in 1866 after the Austro-Prussian War.
