Joseph Anthony Colombo Sr. (Italian: [koˈlombo]; June 16, 1923 – May 22, 1978) was an Italian-American crime boss. He was boss of Colombo Crime Family. This was one of the Five Families in New York City. His father was part of the Profaci crime family. Colombo inherited the leadership of Joseph Profaci. He created the Italian-American Civil Rights League in 1970. During his life, he was only 30 days in prison for contempt of court. During the Second Colombo War, Jerome A. Johnson shot Colombo several times. Colombo survived, but was paralyzed. Colombo died of a cardiac arrest.
