Joseph Edward Murray (April 1, 1919 – November 26, 2012) was an American plastic surgeon.

He is best known for performing the first successful human kidney transplant on identical twins Richard and Ronald Herrick on December 23, 1954.[2]

He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1990 for "discoveries concerning organ and cell transplantation in the treatment of human disease". He shared the prize with E. Donnall Thomas.[1] He attended Harvard Medical School in 1974.[1]

During World War II he was in the Medical Corps of the United States Army.
