Luís Filipe Montenegro Cardoso de Morais Esteves (born 16 February 1973)[1] is a Portuguese Social Democratic Party (PSD) politician who has been the Prime Minister of Portugal since 2024. He was the Leader of the Opposition from 2022 to 2024. He was a member of the Assembly of the Republic from the Aveiro District from 2002 to 2018.
He lost to Rui Rio in his party's leadership election in 2020. He ran again for the party leadership after Rio's resignation in 2022, winning the position.
Montenegro was sworn-in as Prime Minister of Portugal on 2 April 2024 at a ceremony in the Ajuda National Palace in Lisbon.[2][3] Before taking office, Montenegro promised to govern with a minority government instead of forming a coalition with the right-wing populist party Chega.[4]
