Periodate is an ion. Its chemical formula is either IO₄^- (metaperiodate) or IO₆^5- (orthoperiodate). They are the salts of periodic acid. The iodine is in its +7 oxidation state. Periodates are similar to perchlorates. They are strong oxidizing agents. Sodium periodate is the most common periodate.
