ancient Semitic maritime civilization From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Phoenicia was a civilization to the north of Canaan.[1] that existed from 1200 to 900 BC. People from Phoenicia had their own language, Phoenician, which is the origin of most of the world's alphabets.[2]
Phoenicians set up colonies in the Mediterranean region and beyond.[3] Carthage was one of them.[3] Phoenician traders went as far as the British Isles to buy tin.[3] At their peak, the Phoenicians were a major power in the Mediterranean.[3]
