Gregory IX (Latin: Gregorius Nonus; c. 1145 – 22 August 1241), born Ugolino dei Conti di Segni, was an Italian priest of the Roman Catholic Church and the 178th Pope from 19 March 1227 until his death in 1241.[1]

Early life
The Count of Segni lived in Anagni when his son Ugolino was born. The exact date of this birth is not known, but it was around 1145. Ugolino was a nephew of Pope Innocent III.[2]

Cardinal di Conti was elected pope in 1227. He chose to be called Pope Gregory.[3]
