Samuel William Yorty (October 1, 1909 – June 5, 1998) was an American politician, attorney, and radio host. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1951 to 1955. He was the 37th Mayor of Los Angeles from 1961 to 1973. He began his career as a Democrat, but later became a Republican in 1973.
Yorty ran for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States twice in 1964 and in 1972, losing both times.
Yorty died on June 5, 1998 at his home in Los Angeles, California from problems caused by pneumonia, aged 88.[1]
