A synthetic fiber is a type of fiber created by humans through industrial or chemical processes, as opposed to natural fiber made directly from plants or animals. Most synthetic fibers are made from petroleum products.

Two major types of synthetic fiber are the polyamides (including nylon and kevlar) and polyesters.
