The Israelites were divided into twelve tribes, according to the twelve sons of the Biblical patriarch, Jacob:
- Asher
- Benjamin
- Dan
- Gad
- Issachar
- Joseph
- Judah
- Levi
- Naphtali
- Reuben
- Simeon
- Zebulun

The Land of Israel was divided among those tribes, but there were a few exceptions:
- The tribe of Levi got no land but had to do temple duties.
- The tribe of Joseph was divided into two sub tribes:
- Ephraim
- Manasseh
