Khankendi is a city in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, legally in Azerbaijan, but was militarily controlled by the Armenian forces as the capital city of the unrecognised Republic of Artsakh. Stepanakert or The city was about 40,000 ethnic Armenians. The entire Azerbaijani population was driven away from the city during the Nagorno-Karabakh War but now it is populated fully by Azerbaijanis.
