Hevesy študoval chémiu, matematiku a fyziku na univerzitách v Budapešti, v Berlíne a v Freiburgu. Počas štúdia spolupracoval s Ernestom Rutherfordom a Friedrichom Panethom. V Kopenhagene v roku 1922 objavil spolu s Dirk Costerom prvok Hafnium.
V roku 1924 sa oženil s Piou Riisovou. Mali spolu syna a 3 dcéry.
Keď nacistické vojská počas druhej svetovej vojny napadli Dánsko, Hevesy rozpustil Laueho a Franckovu zlatú medailu Nobelovej ceny v lúčavke kráľovskej, aby predišiel ich krádeži. Roztok zanechal na poličke vo svojom laboratóriu v Inštitúte Nielsa Bohra. Po vojne sa Hevesy vrátil do inštitútu kde našiel roztok nedotknutý, následne vyzrážal zlato z roztoku a vrátil ho Nobelovej nadácii. Tá vyrobila pre Laueho a Francka novú medailu.
